PS Plus free games January 2023: Here are the great January PlayStation Plus titles

December is almost over. 2022 is about to shuffle off this mortal coil. January 2023 is looming on the horizon and with it another month of free games for PlayStation Plus. The free PS Plus Essential titles for the coming month are pretty good, though there’s one in particular that I’m looking forward to getting players’ hands on. Let’s look at it.

PlayStation Plus is now a three-tiered subscription service consisting of PS Plus Essential (which we all used to have), PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium. Basically it’s a lot like Xbox Game Pass now. For the purposes of this post, we’re only looking at the Essential titles, which come out on the first Tuesday of every month, while the other two tiers receive new games roughly two weeks later.

Core PS Plus titles from January 2023

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

This month’s free games headliner is Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order from Respawn (Titanfall 2) and EA Games. The Star Wars the action RPG cleverly borrows from dark souls so if you’ve ever wanted to play Souls-like with lightsabers, here’s your chance. I really enjoyed this game. It wasn’t perfect, but it remains one of my favorites Star Wars projects since Disney bought Lucasfilm. It makes sense that this is finally on PS Plus too. Its sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which takes place five years after the first game, launches on March 17.

Fallout 76

I wasn’t a fan Fallout 76 when it came out, and there were a myriad of reasons for that, not the least of which was the complete lack of actual content. But the game has grown, changed and evolved over the years – just like live service games – and it’s a completely different animal than it was when it came out in 2018 (which will soon be five years ago). Either way, it’s free, which is a great excuse to dive in for anyone who’s been on the fence. Explore the wastelands (now with NPCs!) and loot, go on missions, play with friends. . . honestly i wish they would Old scrolls like this game, with co-op adventures, rather than an MMO. Oh, good!

What’s really interesting about this is the fact that Bethesda is now owned by Microsoft, and you can get most of Bethesda’s titles on Xbox Game Pass. I didn’t expect to see one on PS Plus! I wonder if it has something to do with the Activision acquisition and Microsoft showing they are willing to play nice. Now just imagine that you see Horizon Forbidden West or The God of War on Xbox Game Pass. Ha! That will never happen.

Axiom Verge 2

I only played the original Axiom Verge, a pretty crazy/trippy/challenging side scrolling 2D pixel art game but it was pretty awesome and now I can try the sequel for free! Granted, from what I’ve read, it’s a pretty different game to the first one, and it’s a prequel, and it’s not particularly long (which I’m fine with, to be honest), so it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. . . but then again it’s free. Let it boil.

And that, dear readers, is it. In a few weeks, we’ll see what January’s PS Plus Essential and Premium titles are. Happy New Years!
