During a recent interview, Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan revealed that he has been diagnosed with a disease called vestibular hypofunction. “I just switched off recently. I didn’t know what happened to me. I had this thing called vestibular hypofunction, basically you lose your balance,” Varun said during an interview at the India Today Mumbai Conclave 2022. Later, on Monday night, in a series of tweets, the actor shared an update on his health. He thanked his fans for their interest and love.

“I would like to share with anyone who was interested that I am doing much better with the help of yoga, swimming, physical therapy and lifestyle changes,” he wrote. Varun also spoke about the importance of sunlight during recovery. Let’s understand what this condition is.

What is vestibular hypofunction?

Vestibular hypofunction is a condition that affects an individual’s balance. This happens when the inner ear, which is also part of your balance system, doesn’t work properly. The vestibular system (in your inner ear) of the person suffering from this condition does not respond correctly and sends an error message to the brain. As a result, the patient feels dizzy. According to Dr. Vidita Tripathi, consultant ENT at Fortis Hospital, “an imbalance is created in the balance organs which may be primarily due to a viral infection or sometimes there may be other reasons. This may be temporary and sometimes may persist.” but usually a person can make a full recovery within a few weeks. It is not a serious condition and one can recover with the right medication and exercise.”

Symptoms of vestibular hypofunction

Common symptoms include dizziness, vertigo, nausea and poor balance. Some may also have difficulty walking in busy places. Other symptoms depend on the cause of the disease. “Patients may have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, inability to maintain posture, difficulty walking in dark places, and abnormal eye movements,” explained Dr. Dhiraj Gurvinder Singh, Senior ENT and Cochlear Implant Surgeon at Shalby Multispeciality Hospitals, Mohali. symptoms of this condition.

This is the only effective strategy to prevent this,” he said.
