The State Of Destiny 2’s Festival Of The Lost is unacceptable

On Tuesday, Destiny 2 launched Festival of the Lost, its Halloween event, and it didn’t go over well. The event started with a bug that canceled the quests that prevented all progress in the main event path, making all challenges locked and farming the event all day pointless. But while Bungie jumped on the bug and got it cleaned up at the end of the night, it’s just one aspect of why I find Festival of the Lost a huge disappointment, and launch in a state I’d consider unacceptable.

The tradition in the Destiny community is that these seasonal events are mostly about selling cosmetics to players rather than creating a fun experience, and I think that’s exactly what we’re seeing with the Festival of the Lost this year. Bungie was content to copy and paste the event to such an extent that even the glaring issues from last year weren’t fixed, while the main work that has been put in is on the cosmetic side with new armor, ghosts, ships and sparrows to buy. The biggest change is the addition of a $10 “event pass” that includes some cosmetics (and not the best ones) as a new way to “participate” in the event.

Here are the issues with this Festival of the Lost reboot that have me pretty pissed off at the moment:

Wait timer – Bungie left in a really bizarre bug where killing 10 Headless in the Lost Sector, which is exceptionally easy, won’t spawn a boss. Rather, the arena will quiet down, the enemies will stop spawning, and you’ll just have to sit there for 60-90 seconds before the boss appears. This was an obvious, annoying problem last year, and even though Bungie said they wouldn’t have time to fix it before the end of the event, they didn’t fix it in all of last yearand it really doesn’t help the “has anyone actually played this?” narrative that players express when they encounter extremely obvious bugs in the game.

Missing origin properties – Another weird bug is that loot for Festival of the Lost also seems to contain old copies of Festival weapons. Jurassic Green and Braytech Werewolf can drop with their old perk groups and without the new origin trait. I’m not sure if Horror Story even has a new version. So if you’re aiming for a specific roll before the event ends, it’s even more difficult.

Farming page – Literally nothing has changed about how you get pages, meaning the most efficient way to do this is to replay public events. Or if you want more variety, check out the activities. The exact same problem as last year remains, where you spend probably triple the time in the old activities grinding out pages so you can convert them with a single run of Haunted Lost Sectors. This is how the old Haunted Forest didn’t work, at least not to this extent. Again, this should have been modified since last year, and yet it remains exactly the same.

Recycled sectors – I was hoping for a new Haunted Lost Sectors table this year and yet all that happened was the only new thing from EDZ. This includes five new total lines from Eid and a few lines from Drifter, but the “narrative” part of it that started last year has been lost because Glint keeps showing up and saying all the same things and he’s just been hacked. along with some Eido stuff for this year.

Cosmetics – This is the “good” part of the event because yes, the armor and ships and sparrows and emotes and such are all top notch. But the idea behind the Event Pass is still crap, just like last season’s event was, and it feels like ten times more work went into creating the cosmetics than fixing and updating last year’s event. I don’t think that’s acceptable considering Bungie wants these holiday events to be a staple of every future season.

So, major flaw aside, there are still plenty of issues with the 2022 Festival of the Lost, and I’m extremely disappointed with how the event unfolded this year.
